Being a four-decade-old Certified Travel Agent, international airline employee and researcher, writer, teacher, and photographer, I consider travel to be an integral part my life. Around 400 trips took me to various parts of the world by road, rail or sea. I saw both the mundane and the exotic. This article covers Canada, which encompassed all 14 territories and provinces. Labrador:
Labrador spans 500,000 sq. miles between the Atlantic Ocean to Hudson Bay in northeastern Canada. This area is larger than any other North American continent. Its geological structure, created by the ancient Laurentian Shield and internal upheaval, has been compared to the surface that existed before life on Earth began. It is Canada’s most important frontier and was virtually unknown before it became a tourist destination.
Although a few spots could be considered “sights,” as in traditional travel terms, such the Labrador Heritage Museum, Labrador Military Museum or 5 Wing Goose Bay; “attractions,” were those that facilitated life at this location in far north, specifically the Float plane Base and the natural topography (Grand Lake and Mealy Mountains), which could only be seen from the North West River.
Trans Labrador Highway, which ran between Goose Bay (Canada) and Labrador City (Canada), was a 530-kiometer long gravel road. There were shops such as Drumdance Art and Crafts and Trappers Cabin that served steaks prepared by diners.
